The real start procedure, and why the pause is random

On an actual Formula 1 grid the five lights illuminate one per second, and then the interval before they are extinguished is chosen by the starter rather than fixed. Everything about the sequence is designed so that the only way to leave early is to guess.

That unpredictable hold is what this test copies most carefully. If the gap were constant, the sequence would stop measuring reaction and start measuring rhythm, and after three rounds a good sense of timing would beat a good reaction every time.

The lights going out is also the correct signal to build a test around, because it is a change to the whole panel rather than something you have to find. There is no target to locate, which keeps the score closer to plain reaction and further from search.

Jump starts and the two hundred millisecond line

Formula 1 treats a response quicker than 200 milliseconds after the lights go out as impossible to have produced by reacting, and penalises it as a jump start. The reasoning is that the sequence from seeing the change to moving a limb cannot be completed faster than that, so a quicker move must have been already underway.

This test keeps the idea without borrowing the penalty. Move before the lights go out and the round is void and labelled a jump start. Move after them but implausibly fast and the round is still discarded, because a score that could not have come from perception would sit in the chart as a lie about everybody else.

Reacting to the fourth light rather than to the lights going out is the classic way to produce an impressive false number, and it is the reason the sequence here has a randomised hold and the round is thrown away rather than kept.

How drivers actually compare on this

Published grid reaction figures for professional drivers usually fall in the two to three tenths of a second range, which surprises people who expect something superhuman. The elite part of a racing start is not the reaction, it is everything in the following second — clutch, throttle, traction and the decision about which gap to take.

A driver is also braced, staring at a fixed point, with a hand and a foot already loaded and waiting. Sitting at a desk with a mouse you are doing something considerably easier than a race start, so a good number here is not evidence that you would out-launch a professional.

Three rounds make an attempt on this test rather than five, because the light sequence itself takes several seconds and a longer set turns a quick test into a chore. The margin printed on the result is wider as a result, and it says so.

This is a measurement toy, not a medical or psychological test. No score here says anything about your health, attention or cognition, and it is not a screening tool of any kind.
