Typing Test Statistics

Each finished run — timed, counted, quoted or stopped in zen — is recorded as a words-per-minute figure. This page is that distribution, kept separately for physical keyboards and touch, with the breakpoints written out.

Five characters to a word, and why that convention is kept

Passages are different lengths and languages, so a raw character count cannot sit on one axis. Treating five characters as a word is the convention that lets them share a chart, and it is the one almost every burst test already uses, which is the only reason a figure here can be read next to a figure from somewhere else.

Accuracy is not subtracted from the speed. A net figure would move people who type fast and sloppy down the chart without saying so, and the card already reports the two numbers separately.

Rounding to a whole word per minute is deliberate. Tenths of a WPM on a passage this short are noise presented as precision.

Two keyboards, two charts

A phone keyboard and a physical one produce different speeds and different errors. Pooling them would build a curve whose middle described neither group, which is the same reason the reaction tests refuse to mix taps and clicks.

Language is not split, for the same starving-sample reason as verbal memory. A Japanese passage and an English one share a chart until each language can stand on its own, and the caption does not pretend otherwise.

Below two hundred attempts in a mode there is no curve and no percentile, only the count. That gate is the same number as everywhere else on the site, on purpose.

Abandoned sentences are not slow attempts

A timed or counted run that is closed before it can produce a speed, and a zen run stopped with an empty box, are not recorded. Counting those as zeroes would pile the left end of the chart with people who changed their mind, which is not a measurement of typing.

The clock starts on the first character, not on the click that revealed the passage. Reading time is not typing time, and folding it in would punish anyone who looked before they started.

This is a burst, not a lesson. Nothing here tracks weak keys, nothing remembers a visitor, and nothing on this page is an assessment of anyone’s education or employability.

This is a measurement toy, not a medical or psychological test. No score here says anything about your health, attention or cognition, and it is not a screening tool of any kind.

Questions

What is the average typing speed on this test?
It depends on whether the attempt was typed on a physical keyboard or a phone, which is why the two charts are separate. Each one carries its own current breakpoints.
Why is accuracy not taken off the speed?
Because then the chart would hide the errors. Speed and accuracy are both reported; combining them silently would make the worse of the two invisible.
Do unfinished passages count?
No. Only a run that reaches the last character produces a score, so the distribution is finished bursts only.
